FAQS

Q: What is the difference between different synthetic turf companies?

A: As with any industry, synthetic turf products vary, so take time to compare their attributes as well as the company that manufactures them.

Ask about face weights, stitch rates, nylon thatch percentages, backings, infill options and test results. Get samples so you can compare and contrast. Indicate your specific needs, as backings and other aspects of the turf differ depending on use (for example, some types of less expensive backing do not quality for use on sport fields).

If possible visit completed installations or contact customers who’ve used products you’re considering. Ask about yarn technology; great advancements have been made since the days of Astroturf, resulting in more natural, more durable products. Texas Custom Turf takes great pride in carrying only the most advanced yarns available on the market today.

Finally, do your homework on the company making the turf. How long have they been in business? Where is the turf produced? What is covered under warranty? etc.

Q: Is there any maintenance involved?

A: Yes. Turf should be rinsed and groomed periodically, depending on use. For example, if your turf is subject to animals it should be rinsed frequently. Higher traffic areas should be groomed more often.

To properly clean the turf, rinse and use a stiff bristled broom or rake to groom its fibers. This will help prevent matting and maintain a natural, grassy appearance. If the turf is not groomed periodically and mats substantially, we recommend calling Texas Custom Turf to have it groomed professionally to restore its appearance. We also suggest for areas of heavy path traffic that you form a path of stones, bricks, etc. to protect the integrity of the turf.

Q: Is the turf difficult to clean?

A: No — simply rinse with water as needed. Solid waste can be picked up and residue sprayed clean. Rinse as frequently as desired to avoid odors, which are a build up of bacterial spores.

Q: Is synthetic turf safe for pets?

A: Yes! Turf is extremely popular for Animal Hospitals, Kennels, Ranch Owners and Home Owners. Animal urine does not damage or stain synthetic turf, making it much easier to maintain an aesthetically pleasing lawn.

Q: Is it true that synthetic turf can get hot?

A: In direct sunlight and in temperatures above 80 degrees, synthetic turf can get hot. However, blade temperature can be decreased with Durafill, which does not heat up like rubber, so heat is not transferred to the blades of grass (Click here for more information).

Q: What is the difference betweeen infill and non-infill products?

A: “Non-infill products” are convenient when selling directly to the public or simply to make an install easier and less expensive.

However, Texas Custom Turf recommends “low infill” products rathern than “non-infill turf” because the infill provides critical functions:

  • The infill provides a barrier, protecting the tufts during activity.
  • The infill is used for ballast — on a typical installation there are hundreds or thousands of pounds of infill to weigh the product down.
  • The infill provides the surface with the “give” a natural turf system would deliver — that safer, shock absorbing (yet firm) feel underfoot.
  • The infill provides a base for increased blade recovery, helping ensure the grass springs back use after use, throughout product life.

Q: Does the synthetic turf drain?

A: The backing is perforated and will drain like natural grass. For areas where drainage systems are needed for any type of turf, Texas Custom Turf would engineer one for your synthetic system.

Q: Does the sheen go away? And why do some products shine more than others?

A: The sheen will progressively diminish. Some products in the market place are shinier than others for various reasons (wider blades refract more light, rectangular yarns refract more light, some yarns go through a delustering process, etc.). The length of time it takes to “de-sheen” depends on the product shape and the chemical makeup of the yarn.

While the shine of TigerTurf products will lessen over time, their beautiful natural green hues will last — with proper maintenance — for 15+ years due to advanced engineering and UV stabilization.

A: Texas Custom Turf can design and install any type of project you have in mind. From putting greens to backyard landscaping, medians to hotel entrances, dog kennels to playscapes, we’ve got you covered
